100+ Easy watercolor painting ideas for beginners | How to get started?

Lockdown gave us all a lot of free time, from getting back to old hobbies to playing board games. I started exploring Zentangle art. Then one day I came across my old painting book and it made me want to give painting a try. Why not start over??? If it turns out to be good then great. If not, it's still time well spent.

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH WATERCOLOR PAINTING???

As a beginner myself, all these ideas and tips are from my journey and experience.

    1. Choosing the medium

If you are here, it means you have planned to go with watercolour. As of such, different mediums used in art are acrylic, watercolour, graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels etc.

   2. Buy correct art supply.

Start by getting a watercolour book. This is important because other kinds of paper tear up, become uneven while using water colour. Watercolour paint and brush. Initially start with minimum two types of brush. Broad round brush to paint sky, sea and any background and medium or fine brush to add details like leaves, birds, grass etc.

    3. Practice, practice and practice

If you are inherently imaginative, that's great. Put your imagination onto paper. If not (like me), then use internet. Go on YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Google etc.  Find painting or drawings you like, start recreating it. This will give you practice. You will make mistakes and learn a lot. Overtime you will  start getting new ideas yourself. You will also be able to find out what you like. For eg. landscape, sea, galaxy, floral art and more.

If you are finding something difficult look it up on YouTube. There are a lot of free and educative channels and videos available. Start practising again with the tips you learnt.

(Important: If you are planning on posting the recreated art on any platform, please give credit to the respective artists, do not copy)

   4. Try to make it more creative

You can choose any other art form / style to collaborate with  watercolour. Eg. Doodling, lettering, mandala etc. Maybe this will help you find your own art style. You never know!!!

    5. Trust the process

Failing is a part of the process. Do not give up. Everyone starts somewhere. Every artist has books filled with failed execution. Practice is how you get better. Keep learning and keep painting.
